A lifetime free credit card has no joining fee and no annual or renewal fee for as long as you hold it. That removes two charges. It does not remove interest, late fees, cash advance fees or forex markup, and some "free" cards come with conditions on who can get them. Here is what the issuers' own pages say.

Free is not the same as conditionally waived

Axis ACE (₹499) and HDFC MoneyBack+ (₹500 + taxes) waive their fee only when you spend a set amount. Miss it and you pay. That is a different thing from lifetime free — see how those waivers work.

Cards issuers describe as fee-free

As stated on each issuer's pages, checked 21 October 2026.

What a lifetime free card still costs

  • Interest. Charged on balances carried past the due date. Both issuers we checked state 3.75% a month: HDFC for its non-premium variants (45% a year), Axis for ACE (55.55% a year, compounded).
  • Late payment fees. Axis ACE's schedule runs from nil up to ₹1,300 depending on the amount due.
  • Cash withdrawals. HDFC MoneyBack's page lists 2.5% of the amount or ₹500, whichever is higher.
  • Forex. Not free just because the annual fee is. See the full list of charges.
  • Optional add-ons. IDFC FIRST's pages describe separate charges for a UPI-enabled digital card (₹199 + GST) and for card personalisation (₹499 + GST).

Who can actually get one

Fee-free cards usually trade the fee for a gate:

  • Invitation. ICICI describes the Amazon Pay card as an invite-only programme.
  • Income. ICICI states ₹30,000 a month. IDFC FIRST's income figures vary by card and by page.
  • A deposit. WOW! is backed by a fixed deposit, so some of your money is locked with the bank.

Questions worth answering before applying

  1. Is the fee waived for life, or only while you meet a spend threshold?
  2. Does the card's reward rate depend on a single app or merchant?
  3. What does it charge for foreign transactions and late payments?
  4. Are there optional extras the application flow adds by default?
